This page is a means of making my Diplomarbeit (diploma thesis) publicly available. The subject is the transformation of Ulysses. A Critical and Synoptic Edition, ed. Hans Walter Gabler et al. into an adequate SGML encoding, which is to a large extent TEI, but not in every aspect.
A word of warning: This is a rather technical paper (the technologies involved are critical editing, TEI/SGML, and Perl programming) of about 135 pages. It is written in German, and available only in Postscript format for 300 and 600 dpi resolution.

Diese Arbeit beschreibt ein umfangreiches Konvertierungsprojekt. Eine komplexe textkritische Edition von James Joyces Ulysses stand außer als Buch auch in Form der Dateien zur Verfügung, nach denen die gedruckte Ausgabe mit dem TUSTEP-System hergestellt worden ist. Mein Ziel war die Erzeugung eines SGML-Dokuments aus diesen Dateien.
Im ersten Teil der Arbeit leiste ich eine gründliche Analyse der dafür relevanten Informationsstrukturen sowohl im eigentlichen Text wie im editorischen Metatext der Buchausgabe.
Auf dieser Grundlage und auf der Basis der Document Type Definition, die von der Text Encoding Initiative für die Erfassung literarischer Texte entworfen wurde, beschreibe ich im zweiten Teil das von mir erstellte SGML-Modell, in dem die gefundenen Strukturen sinnvoll ausgedrückt werden können.
Die Durchführung der automatisierten Konvertierung aus den TUSTEP-Dateien in das erstellte SGML-Format und die dafür geschriebenen Programme stelle ich im dritten Teil der Arbeit dar.

NOTE: I was warned that the 600dpi version has a technical problem (SGML tags are not properly represented). I have uploaded a new version on March 12, 2001 that should fix this problem, hopefully without introducing others.
